Use These Important Design Tips to Optimize Your Small Business Website

Whether you're spending extravagantly on your new small business website or designing it yourself, there are several design elements that can determine the success or failure of your website. In his article on the blog Domains – Online, Andy Doan provides these 5 tips to follow to ensure that your site is user-friendly and conducive to sales. In brief, they are:

1) Ensure that your site loads in 5 seconds or less – any more time risks visitors giving up and moving on.

2) Limit your menu bar to 5 options – trying to be all things to all people is confusing and cumbersome. If your site requires more options, consider creating subcategories available on the pages of the 5 main categories.

3) Create a clear call to action on every page – make clear what you want the customer to do. Do you want him to buy? Contact you? Add a comment? Make it clear with text and visuals.

4) Provide clear access to Help options – avoid losing visitors who may need to ask a question. Make clear that live chat, telephone, e-mail, etc. are readily available.

5) Show consistency with design elements – pay attention to font style and size, graphics, style of copywriting. Everything should be coordinated for clarity and consistency.
