Procrastination: Is It Fear Of Success?

istock_000003375319xsmall.jpgDr. Robert Anthony, noted author and psychotherapist, sheds light on the real cause of procrastination in his article "Procrastination - How To Stop It!." Procrastination, Dr. Anthony explains, is the result of an underlying fear of how becoming successful might change your life.

Dr. Anthony explains that if you want something badly enough, success for example, you will get it. When there are powerful emotions tied to a desire, you can manifest it. However if your desire to remain in your comfort zone is more passionate than your desire for success, you will not move forward toward achieving what you desire - you will procrastinate.

The author further explains that the real reason we procrastinate is because we are actually getting some benefit out of not moving forward. The benefit may be that by not moving forward, you can remain in your comfort zone. Achieving success may be more challenging than staying where you are now, and this concept is scary to many. You may be miserable now, but at least you're comfortable.

The author suggests asking yourself two key questions to get to the root of your fears:

1) What benefit am I getting from NOT realizing my dreams?

2) What am I afraid will happen if I do? (Examples of fears may be how your lifestyle might change, or what other people might think.)

He suggests reviewing your answers to these questions, and then evaluating whether your fears are serving you, or whether it's time to let go of them and move on. For more in-depth reading, read the article Here.
