To balance the many hours of overtime invested in growing their businesses, solopreneurs especially need to schedule equal time to devote to themselves and their families. Achieving work-life harmony contributes to both a healthy lifestyle and, in turn, a healthy business.
Wendy Piersall's article on Entrepreneur.com lists 20 tips we can put into action to help to achieve work-life balance.
In brief, they are:
1) Set up a “busy schedule” and stick to it - You have a "normal" schedule, which at times gets out of hand with many extra hours. To keep this in check, schedule "busy days" in which you will work 2-4 extra hours.
2) Schedule down time - Schedule actual breaks for yourself, such as "coffee," and take them. Treat them as actual appointments.
3) Squeeze in walks - A walk can clear your mind, and give you much-needed exercise. It can help you feel more creative and energized as well.
4) Ask for help - Ask when you need it.
5) Say NO - "ditto, ditto, ditto!"
6) Avoid overwhelm by making lists - Making a list can enlighten you as to whether you're truly overloaded, or what you've been thinking you have to do is, in reality, not that bad. Use lists to realistically eliminate what you can.
7) Focus on your outcome, not current - Keeping your eye on your goal will help you endure the rough patches in getting there.
Put your perfectionism on the shelf - You can't be perfect at everything, so when things are busy, decide what you're willing to let go of a little bit.
9) Get support - Whether it's a friend, a - get help when you need it in busy times.
10) Eat at least one meal a day with family or friends - A meal with a friend or your family can nourish the soul. Take an hour each day to do this for yourself.
